Fear of the future Dystopia and political imagination in the twentieth century
الخوف من المستقبل | الديستوبيا والخيال السياسي في القرن العشرين
After centuries of contemplating utopias, writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries began to warn of a dystopian future. However, these concerns extended beyond classic texts of dystopian fiction, to include postwar discourses on totalitarianism, mass society, and technology, as well as subsequent political theories of freedom and domination. Fear of the Future demonstrates the centrality of dystopian thought in twentieth-century political thought, demonstrating the prevalence of dystopian images, themes, and fears. Fear of the Future offers a fresh reading of key themes and thinkers, exploring visions of the future in literary figures such as Yevgeny Zamyatin, Aldous Huxley, and George Orwell; political theorists such as Max Weber, Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Jürgen Habermas, and Michel Foucault; And mid-twentieth-century sociologists such as Erich Fromm, Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, David Riesman, and C. Wright Mills, and Jacques Ellul. The book provides a comparative analysis of distinct intellectual and literary traditions, including modern utopia and anti-utopia, mid-twentieth-century social science, Frankfurt School critical theory, and continental political philosophy. Through detailed case studies of prominent thinkers from the Enlightenment to the late twentieth century, the book brings together secondary literature and research from diverse disciplinary fields, including political theory, intellectual history, literary studies, and utopian studies. This comprehensive analysis shows that while dystopian thinking has made visible the dangers of domination and dehumanization, it has also highlighted new possibilities for freedom.
