In the face of the contemporary wave of hatred and violence, from the political arena to social media and even the educational sphere, this article examines the “causes of irrationality.” It reveals a double scourge: hatred of reason and unbridled utilitarian rationalism, which empties our lives of their meaning. Through a critical dialogue with the ancient tradition (Plato, Aristotle) ​​and contemporary debates, this article calls for a rationality that has returned to judgment, moderation, and the pursuit of wisdom, capable of calming the vortex of emotions and restoring the calming power of thought. The book “A World Prey to Violence or Hatred of Reason” by Evelyn Fauconnier-Girard reviews a structural crisis striking contemporary societies, where rationality is eroding in the face of the creep of violent feelings and hatred growing in politics, social communication, and education. The author diagnoses a dual disease of hatred of the mind (Misology) and its transformation into a cold tool devoid of values, calling for the restoration of the mind as an exercise of wisdom and measure to confront violence and break the cycle of revenge.
