الغجر | قصة هوية ومقاومة
الغجر | قصة هوية ومقاومة
A fascinating look into the history and lives of Roma. At every step of my journey, I encountered poignant stories of those who resisted exclusion, and whose lives continue to inspire us today. Madeline Potter weaves her autobiography as a gypsy woman with archival research into a captivating narrative. She debunks the old stereotype of “travelers” with real-life stories, such as that of boxer Johann Rückeli Trollmann, the German light heavyweight champion who had his title stripped by the Nazis. Or the story of Carmen Amaya, a Spanish gypsy woman who was known as the world's best flamenco dancer in the mid-20th century. From Tudor England to contemporary Romania, and from Nazi Germany to 21st-century France, we learn about Romani communities and their struggles. Madeleine Potter shows how the deep-rooted hatred of this minority has persisted for centuries. Above all, it praises the strength and resilience of the Roma, and their ability to resist and survive.
