Egoism, as a general social constraint, is increasing with the shrinkage of the welfare state, weakened by decades of neoliberalism, especially among the upper middle class, understood as the alliance between the core of the stable middle class and the upper classes, which contributes to its spread in society. For their part, they do not deny the existence of disparities, but rather their adherence to the principles of individual responsibility is increasing. In contrast, the working classes, forced to work on their own account in light of their fragile situation, are witnessing transformations in the labor market that disintegrate collectives and force them to rely on individual self-reliance. The selfishness theorized in this work does not question the strength of social bonds or the number of acts of solidarity. More importantly, it is devoid of any moral value. They are the product of a social system adapted to a context of increasing competition for positions and resources. It is necessary to understand its underlying mechanisms and explain its consequences to build a sustainable political alternative.
