Poverty has profound, long-term, intergenerational impacts on children's physical and mental health and their education, through limited employment and income opportunities, as well as limited housing options available in old homes in crowded neighbourhoods. In these circumstances, the risk of exposure to environmental toxins, such as lead and air pollution, increases, leading to negative physical and mental health outcomes, especially for children, which, along with limited access to quality health care, exacerbates the deterioration of their health and function, thus limiting their future chances of success and perpetuating the suffering of poverty. This intergenerational pattern can be represented by the cycle of health disparities, which provides a conceptual framework for developing intervention strategies. Breaking the Cycle of Environmental Health Disparities for Children is an annual, collaborative, interdisciplinary research and training program for college students, who recognize the impact of negative social, economic, and environmental factors on children's health, growth, learning, and development, and engage in creative projects to break this cycle and reduce health disparities among children, and in the process gain insights and skills that qualify them to become future leaders in our society. Presented in this book are the projects of students who participated in the 18th annual Breaking the Cycle program.
