Modernity in the thought of Youssef Salama

الحداثة في فكر يوسف سلامة

Translated

The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies published the book Modernity in the Thought of Youssef Salama, as part of a series of publications, prepared and presented by Dr. Khaldoun Al-Nabwani. This book documents the profound philosophical experience of the thinker Youssef Salama (1956-2024), gathering together his intellectual archive, which remained distributed among manuscripts, lessons, and dialogues, to present to the Arab library an important reference in criticizing Western modernity that examines the reasons for the faltering of Arab modernity and how to overcome its obstacles. The importance of this book is evident in its evocation of one of the aspects of contemporary Palestinian/Syrian philosophy that has been absent from us recently. It fills a major knowledge and documentation gap left by the nature of Salama’s intellectual work. He adopted a “Socratic” approach to philosophizing, which gives priority to live dialogue and oral teaching at the expense of blogging and paper publishing. Which made a large part of his important archive absent from the Arab reader. This work comes as a first step in bringing this archive to light, giving the Arab Library an opportunity to learn about original intellectual texts that have not been published before, and providing fertile material for researchers in the fields of modernist philosophy and questions of the contemporary Arab renaissance.
