عدو الشمس | شعر المقاومة الفلسطينية

Translated

A Palestinian poetry collection first published in 1970, embodying liberation and civil rights struggles around the world. This updated edition, aimed at today's generation of activists, includes new poems translated by Edmund Gharib, the world-renowned Lebanese-American scholar, and a new introduction by Dr. Greg Thomas. In 1971, following the murder of George Jackson by San Quentin prison guards, a poem titled “Enemy of the Sun” was found among ninety-nine books in the rebel’s cell. The handwritten poem circulated in Black Panther newspapers in Jackson's name, believing it to be a remnant of his imprisonment that lasted more than a decade. But Jackson never wrote the poem; Rather, it was written by the Palestinian poet Samih Al-Qasim, and published in a poetry anthology bearing the same title a year before Jackson’s death. Originally published by Drum & Spear, the publishing arm of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the anthology _"Enemy of the Sun: The Poetry of Palestinian Resistance"_ brings together twelve poets working with the poetics of rejection and hope. Bearing witness to decades of Zionist occupation, to a displaced diaspora in refugee camps, and to writers detained in Israeli prisons, this collection offers a means to an end: “As poetry, yes, it sings – as bullets on a mission; it calls for change.” In every poem there is a full life - joy, love, beauty, anger, sadness, suffering - and in every life a record of resistance: traces of a people who refuse to leave their homeland, a people who repeatedly turn grief into principled struggle. In the interwoven histories of this book, and in the constant political dimension of the poems themselves, lies a long story of solidarity between oppressed peoples: from Palestine to South Africa to Algeria to Vietnam to the United States.
