Jeevan Vasagar, climate editor at The Observer, writes in his provocative and disturbing Madlark book, “The Surge: The Race Against the Most Destructive Force in Nature.” Nature: “We have created a world of floods.” In the book, Vasagar explores the problems and causes behind rising water levels, and reveals the way in which people are harming themselves through their hasty and ill-considered responses to floods around the world. Among the small examples he gives: Hundreds of basements have been excavated under luxury homes in London's most upscale neighbourhoods, which he describes as "a recipe for chaos in the event of one of the flash floods that have become increasingly common in the capital."
