In the summer of 2024, the red triangle, an Islamic symbol of struggle used by Hamas to distinguish its opponents, suddenly appeared in several European cities. This event sparked an investigative research trip undertaken by Anna Borsyan. The extremism expert analyzed secret chat groups, monitored demonstrations and conferences, and worked in the archives of leftist and pro-Palestinian movements. Her analysis focused on transnational networks such as Badil Path and Samadoun, which, under the banner of “resistance,” promote a political discourse in which armed Islamist groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah appear as legitimate actors in a global struggle against imperialism – a discourse that has also spread within authoritarian leftist groups since 7 October 2023. Why are such alliances formed? What anti-fascist principles are being abandoned in this process? What are the political consequences when the struggle against injustice becomes a justification for anti-Semitism and violence?
