The persecution of the Jainish people in Switzerland is a “crime against humanity.” This is the conclusion of a legal opinion commissioned by the Federal Ministry of the Interior in February 2025. From 1926 to 1973, more than 600 Jainish children were taken from their families by the Road Children Relief Organization under the pretext of saving them from a miserable life. “Children of the Road” was an initiative of the Pro Joventut Foundation, implemented with the support of the authorities. This groundbreaking legal opinion is the result of decades of struggle by victims, including O'Shea Wasser. As a child, she was taken from her Yenish mother and raised in countless institutions, where she suffered violence and humiliation. O'Shea did not learn that the "Pro Joventut" Foundation was behind her painful childhood and adolescence until she was over thirty years old. When she looked at her files, she collapsed. In her book, Speaking Out to Avoid Suffocation, the author uses her life story to highlight the systematic cruelty with which the Children of the Road targeted families, and the lasting effects on those affected. At the same time, the book tells the story of a woman who fights tirelessly for rehabilitation and justice.
