#### Diligent analysis deconstructs the myth of “regional conflict” to reveal that the real disease threatening our democracy is none other than nationalism itself. * Contemporary Spanish politics is built on an illusion promoted by nationalists, legitimized by the left, and embraced by the critically unthinking right: that Spain is an anti-democratic anomaly that has oppressed supposedly authentic nations, such as Catalonia and the Basque Country. This article deconstructs this illusion, arguing that the autonomist regime, rather than redressing long-standing perceived injustices, has, through misaligned incentives, reinforced regional inequalities, class privileges, and a decline in the quality of democracy. According to Felix Oveiro, there is no “regional problem,” but rather a national problem that has polluted public debate and defined political action for decades. “The Invention of Grievances” deconstructs the central myths of this narrative, arguing that nationalism must be combated as justifications for racism and sexism were combated in the past: not by accepting their terms, but by demonstrating that the real problem lies in its ideological foundations. Paying particular attention to the imaginary complicity of the Left which, contrary to its egalitarian and democratic principles, grants moral legitimacy to these theses, this book calls for the creation of institutions for the democracy of free and equal citizens and warns of the dangers of continuing to legitimize a deeply reactionary narrative.
