It tells the story of a woman, the first to expose corruption in the Gurtel case, who witnessed the flow of money into the city west of Madrid as a result of real estate speculation, and how people gradually became entangled in the complex web of corruption. Instead of going along with the trend or turning a blind eye, I decided to report the matter. The end is neither pretty nor helpful: he loses everything except, perhaps, his dignity. This is not just the story of one of the most high-profile cases of corporate corruption in recent years, nor even the story of a city council or a specific political party, because crime, moral decadence, and abuse of power transcend party affiliations. It is a tale of how corruption arises and spreads like a cancer. It is brilliantly told in the first person, with a sarcastic, humorous style, and with hints of those hallmarks of Spanish culture: exoticism, absurdity, cunning, even vulgarity. One of the questions the book raises is: Is corruption inherent in the system? Is it part of our cultural heritage? And most important of all: What would you do if you were in their place?
