#### If there is a prevailing neoliberal slogan, it is the portrayal of the left as incapable of managing public resources efficiently. * However, from 2015 to 2019, for the first time in our modern democratic history, the left took control of the Spanish capital. This gave them the opportunity to forcefully refute these repeated arguments. In this book, the protagonists of that administration recount the most notable and important milestones in the Madrid city government, explaining clearly and in a didactic manner how it was possible not only to reduce the public debt and balance the accounts, but above all, to make it compatible with a significant increase in spending and social investment, which relied essentially on three pillars: exposing and correcting the irregularities that occurred during the years of rule of the PP, reforming the tax system to ensure that large corporations and the wealth pay relatively more and the majority of society pay less, and restoring or redirecting the management of some public services. It also explains how the right resisted all these developments through the media, political and institutional spheres, and how this exciting experiment was ultimately forcefully aborted. Any leftist political project that threatens elite privileges will face major challenges. Understanding these challenges is the first step towards overcoming them when a similar opportunity arises in the future.
