الإسلام في مانشستر.. العرق والدين والأداء

The Making of Muslim Identity explores how British Muslims engage with social, political and religious tensions in the UK through their performance in everyday life. Based on nearly two years of interdisciplinary research in Manchester during the late 2000s and early 2010s, this book examines diverse contexts, from innovative theater projects to public marches and the aftermath of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. The book distinguishes between Islam as a religion and Islamic identity as a performed identity, arguing that Islamic identity emerges through a negotiation based on the relationship of individuals with the social structure of Islam. Through theatremaking, ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and media analysis, the book deconstructs the racist British assumption that equates Muslim identity with Asian heritage. Instead, it reveals a resistant British Muslim public space that fosters solidarity, challenges harmful narratives, and creates socially just artistic spaces. This work links theater and performance studies with the anthropology of Islam, Britain, and youth, while simultaneously examining the intersections of Muslim identity with race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and British identity. This book is essential reading for scholars and students in performance studies, religious studies, sociology, and cultural studies interested in contemporary Muslim identities, performance, and the politics of belonging in multicultural Britain.
