This book examines how the Taliban was able to regain power in Afghanistan in 2021, after nearly 20 years of American intervention. This book provides an analysis of the factors that contributed to the Taliban being able to seize power following the withdrawal of the international coalition in August 2021, ending twenty years of international intervention in the country. It is the result of a comprehensive review of policy research and literature over twenty years, and is based on publicly available data, including threat assessments conducted by Danish intelligence services. Academic and policy reports offer multiple explanations for why the Taliban was able to rise to power despite efforts to prevent it. Based on published studies, research, and reports, the book identifies five basic factors for understanding the outcome. These factors provide comprehensive explanations for why the Taliban regained power, with each factor encompassing a different set of challenges that constituted essential conditions for the Taliban's seizure of power. Although the book is not about assigning blame, the explanations contained in it contribute to enriching the discussion about how to ensure the necessary knowledge base for future decision-making when faced with new emergencies that require possible international intervention. This book will be of interest to students of security studies, conflict resolution, Asian security, military interventions, peacebuilding, and international relations.
