Tatarstan Sovereignty Movement A detailed academic study of the history of nationalism in Tatarstan. The book shows how the collapse of the state and the nationalist renaissance affected the divergence of worldviews among people of the former Soviet era in Tatarstan, where the political movement demanding sovereignty (1986-2000) had profound social impacts, most notably expanding the spread of the Tatar language and spreading ideas related to Tatar culture. The book also addresses the experience of Russian Muslims in their daily lives in the post-Soviet era. This is the only ethnographic book in English on the Tatars, the second most populous people in Russia and the largest Muslim community in the federation, and makes a valuable addition to our understanding of how and why nations were formed, and, in the case of the Tatars, their importance and the limits of their influence.
