Representations of National Culture * Fifty-one texts embody the development of modernism in Eastern Europe. Essays and poems, as well as excerpts from longer works, provide new opportunities for comparisons between different national cultures. This volume focuses on literary and scholarly attempts to reconcile individual and collective identities. These texts, which are often explicitly critical of the Romantic epistemological approach, reflect a more mature and critical attitude than in previous periods. At the same time, rather than representing a complete rupture, they often continue and confirm romantic identity narratives, albeit by other means. The volume also presents the ways in which national minorities have sought to legitimize their existence by reference to their cultural and institutional specificity.
