Missionaries, Modernity, and Marginalization in the Siberian Tundra This book traces the story of the indigenous Nenets community in Siberia, and how their lives were radically changed by religious conversion in post-Soviet Russia and under Putin. The book draws on more than a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in a region today largely closed to outsiders, providing an intimate account of faith, power, and resilience in one of the most marginalized communities in the Arctic. Long affected by Russian colonialism and Soviet modernization, the Nenets nomads experienced widespread religious conversions in the mid-1990s, culminating in the creation of a Church in the Tundra linked to a radical evangelical movement. Amid Putin's tightening grip, as indigenous peoples and religious minorities face renewed surveillance and harassment, the book traces the lives of Nenets and missionaries whose encounters across the tundra ignited tensions between converts and non-converts, and between religion and state. Through stories of hope, loss, and resilience, the book reveals how global evangelical Christianity intersects with local traditions, reshaping kinship, belonging, and modernity in the Siberian tundra.
