في أفريقيا .. بنات ذكور وأزواج إناث
In 1987, more than a decade before the emergence of queer theory, Effie Amadeum wrote her book, “Male Daughters, Female Husbands,” which received widespread critical acclaim. In this book, Amadeum boldly argues that the concept of gender, as depicted in Western feminist discourse, did not exist in Africa before colonialism imposed a binary understanding of sexual difference. This new edition of Essential Amadeum explains to a new generation of readers the specifically Western origins of gender essentialism that are a response to much current gender theory. By showing how these concepts were projected onto other cultures through colonialism, and exploring traditional practices in West Africa that conceptualize gender differently, this edition reopens new horizons for alternatives.
