Could travel to Mars and extraterrestrial colonies become a reality in the near future, or is it just science fiction? Why would we leave our beloved planet in the first place? In "Out of Earth" we embark on a space journey with the final destination being Mars, where we establish the first human colony. We go beyond the technical aspects of space travel, and delve into how microorganisms can be used to produce food, medicine and building materials, to bring Mars closer to Earth. We also study how humans could use biotechnology to adapt to life in space, perhaps eventually evolving into a multiplanetary species inhabiting multiple celestial bodies. Whether space exploration is motivated by a severe climate crisis or economic gain, the relentless pursuit of places no one has ever been before is deeply human.
