Adam Mead's book is an essential reference for students of history, particularly the early history of Berkshire Hathaway. It tells the story of a famous intellectual property theft, dating back to 1789 when Samuel Slater snuck out of England with the knowledge of how to build an efficient watermill. It also highlights a venture capital story, in which financiers from Pawtucket, Rhode Island (including Hetty Greene, the wealthy heiress to a new shipping fortune in Bedford) provided venture funding for Slater's project. The book points to rapid growth similar to the growth of the Internet, with 20 Slater-style mills spreading across New England in just the first 20 years. Finally, the book examines the first versions of special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), then known as “stock companies,” which were underwritten by the wealthy Boston merchant Francis Lowell. Adam begins his story by pointing to an established hegemon, in this case England, concerned about losing its global standing to a rising United States, through fair competition and America's use of stolen technology. Doesn't this look familiar?
