Narcissism is an excessive preoccupation with oneself and a disregard for the needs of others, and is often manifested in behaviors whose negative impact on those around them is not realized. In his book “Narcissistic Burners,” writer Musa Yacoub Qasim reviews two main sources of narcissism at the level of individuals, groups, and cultures: The first stems from social violence directed towards an object or entity, and the second from self-aggrandizement or glorification of a particular entity. The writer sheds light on what he calls “the silent epidemic of narcissism,” examining multiple examples from individual cases and social segments, with a focus on the negative dimensions of narcissism, given its lack of an effective positive side.
