The first English translation of Willem Flusser's last series of lectures: a comprehensive introduction to his methods and ideas in new media theory In the summer of 1991, shortly before his death, Willem Flusser gave a series of lectures as a visiting professor at Ruhr University Bochum at the invitation of Friedrich Kittler. Flusser aimed for these lectures to be a comprehensive introduction to the science of communication, the study of human communication and the means by which acquired information is preserved, processed, and transmitted. In Thinking Deeper, Aaron Jaffe and Michael F. Miller compiled excerpts from these lectures - first published in German in 2008 - to present Flusser's most important and foundational contributions to what is known today as media studies. These anthologies exemplify Flusser's engagements with a wide range of theories, approaches, and interventions, including ecocriticism, posthumanism, game theory, cybernetics, and linguistic exchanges. “Thinking Deeper” provides in-depth analyzes of the ideas of Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Michel Cyrre, and Jean Baudrillard, presenting models of the possibilities of thinking about and clarifying the most ambiguous and complex implications of technology and modernity. While these writings demonstrate Flusser's contextual stance and anti-totalitarianism, they also highlight the pleasure and power of his concise style. Focusing less on Flusser as a philosopher and more on his role as a cynical sage at the end of history, Thinking Further provides a comprehensive, easy-to-understand introduction to his transnational exploration of the possibilities of communication, writing, and the human condition.
