الهلال الأسود.. تجربة المسلمين الأفارقة وإرثهم في الأمريكتين
This book begins with a study of fifteenth-century Latin America, a social history of the experiences of African Muslims and their descendants in the Americas, including the Caribbean. The book covers their history under slavery, as well as the post-slavery period through the twentieth century. These experiences vary, perhaps in part because of the ancient world context. The book also discusses the Islamic revolutions in Brazil, especially in 1835, through careful analysis. The second part of the book deals with the emergence of Islam among people of African descent in the United States in the twentieth century, and includes successive chapters on Noble Drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, with the aim of explaining how Orthodox thought emerged from various non-Orthodox roots. This was perhaps the most important book that my library had missed so far. Professor Gomez presented a brilliant and great story about the many experiences of African Muslims in the Americas. Through extensive study, deep vision, and an elegant style, he undoubtedly presented a definitive work on Islam among these African peoples in the New World. Anyone who hopes to understand the historical and contemporary appeal of this religion among the African diaspora will be right to read this rich and comprehensive work. Claude Clegg, Indiana University, is an encyclopedic book that includes wonderful information from He collected large collections of sources and discussed many of the insights of previous writers. He gave priority to North and West Africa and the movement of slaves to Brazil, the Caribbean, and also North America. This unique volume will inspire many researchers in African and American history to conduct further study of Islam and slavery.”
