Censorship Industrial Complex In late 2022, Twitter files began to reveal a vast network of government agencies, NGOs, think tanks, academic departments, foundations, giant tech companies, and others, collaborating to suppress freedom of expression online. This network was known as the "control industrial complex." From the COVID-19 pandemic to Russia, from the 2016 election to the Hunter Biden laptop affair, and beyond, the terms “disinformation,” “misinformation,” and “malicious information” have invaded the public sphere, and been weaponized to justify restrictions on freedom of expression and censorship. Drawing on his experience mapping the censorship industrial complex for Matt Taibbi during the Twitter Files Project, Andrew Lowenthal unveils this new system for managing public thought and influencing public opinion. It details how, in the wake of the Brexit vote and the election of Trump in 2016, the infrastructure built to combat terrorism was transformed into countering violent extremism, and then into countering populism, where censorship played a pivotal role. He describes how liberals and progressives have come to view freedom of expression not as a path to liberation, but as a threat to be suppressed, and the ill-fated deal they have struck with the government, intelligence agencies, and Big Tech to suppress populist opposition from both the right and the left. It is the story of the Left's betrayal of one of its core values, and the radical political realignment that this betrayal brought about. The battle for freedom of expression is not over yet. Lowenthal warns of emerging new threats, and outlines what it will take to defend freedom of expression in the next decade.
