The employment challenge in low- and middle-income countries is one of today's most pressing development issues. With the increase in the number of young people involved in the labor market, and coinciding with the structural transformation that the world is witnessing amid deindustrialization, technological disruptions, and global competition, the issue of providing decent and sufficient job opportunities has become a fundamental focus for the future of the global South economy. Although this is a common challenge among developing regions, it is particularly prominent in Africa, where rapid demographic change and urbanization coincide with limited industrial expansion. The book "The Future of Work in Developing Countries" brings together a group of prominent international researchers, and addresses the problem of employment from multiple angles. The first chapters develop conceptual frameworks about corporations and global hierarchies of production. Subsequent contributions explore the dynamics of structural transformation, the role of firms in linking production and labor to surplus, and the design of industrial and technological policies.
