For forty years, the concept of “Judeo-Christian civilization” has dominated political and media discourse in the West, presented as the cultural foundation of Europe and North America. But what does this expression that has become a dominant reference hide? This concept has been used by various parties – states, political movements and nationalities – to rewrite history. In Europe, it has been used to hide two millennia of anti-Semitic persecution, deny the East’s contribution to its past, and exclude Islam from its cultural references. Since its establishment, Zionism and then the State of Israel had to confirm its exclusive connection with the West, and today declare that it is “the advanced bulwark of Judeo-Christian civilization” in the face of the “Arab-Muslim enemy,” while the Arab nationalities saw this expression as an appropriate tool to deny the Jewish dimension in the history of their countries.
