جيمس لوب وتاريخ الطب النفسي
جيمس لوب وتاريخ الطب النفسي
James Loeb (https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674997752) (1867-1933), one of the most prominent patrons of the arts and philanthropists of his time, left a lasting legacy in America, where he was born and educated, and in Germany, the homeland of his ancestors, where he spent the second half of his life. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth, annual James Loeb Conferences commemorate his achievements in four areas: Loeb Classical Library (2017), Collecting and Connoisseurship (2019), and, after postponement due to the pandemic, Psychology and Medicine (2023), and Music (2025). While the focus of the third conference has shifted from Loeb as a physician to Loeb as a patient, the connection between his philanthropy and his personal experience remains clear and interesting. Loeb suffered from the illness known today as severe bipolar disorder, which was treated by Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926), a pioneer in interdisciplinary brain research and psychiatry. Drawing from the extensive annals of this treatment, the contributors to this volume address the history of mental illness from antiquity to the present in light of Loeb's case, his research, and his contributions to medical humanism and psychiatry.
