After Rumi, the Mawlawis and their world | A prominent scholar of Islamic history recounts the rise of the Mawlawiyyah, the influential Sufi community founded by Rumi. The Persian poet and scholar Jalal al-Din Rumi, who lived in the thirteenth century, remains revered to this day. However, not enough attention has been paid to the Sufi group he founded: the Mevlevi, who are sometimes called the "Mevlevi Dervishes." This community, centered around Rumi's descendants and disciples, flourished in Anatolia during a period of unprecedented political, religious, and linguistic transformations. By the 17th century, they had become the prominent bearers of the Rumi legacy throughout the Ottoman world. See Jamal J. Elias believes that the understanding of Mawlawiyya is that it is a group rooted in kinship ties and emotional closeness, supported by a generation-long partnership between the descendants of Jalal al-Din Rumi, known as the Chalabis, and scholars dedicated to studying his works. These partnerships contributed to shaping the religious, artistic, and social priorities of the Mawlawiyya, and also consolidated the status of both Rumi and the Persian language in Ottoman society. As the Turkish language dominated literature and administration in the Ottoman world, Persian literacy declined although classical Persian texts continued to be appreciated. Over time, the Mawlawiyya became the most important authority in the study of Rumi's works, especially his multi-part poetic epic known as _Masnavi,_ which gradually acquired a prominent quasi-religious status. _After Rumi_ offers a revealing account of religious formation, highlighting the emotional dimensions of spiritual life and the dynamics of cultural exchange in the eastern Mediterranean in pre-modern times.
