Interventional neurosurgery is an essential technique in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular and spinal diseases. It is necessary to understand the history of its development and the logic of the development of its technologies. This book summarizes the development of interventional neurosurgical techniques as imaging, delivery systems, and embolic materials, and illustrates the interdisciplinary characteristics of this field through exemplary cases. The history of interventional neurosurgery is naturally divided into the pre-modern era, represented primarily by the history of direct puncture of cerebral aneurysms and traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulas, and the modern era, represented by the history of intracranial endovascular interventions themselves, made possible by imaging of intracranial vascular lesions, easy access to catheters and guide wires, control of embolic agents, and anesthesia safety, all of which developed in the twentieth century.
