In the book The White Pedestal | How do white nationalist thought leaders exploit ancient Greece and Rome to justify their violent and oppressive policies? It is difficult to ignore the resurgence of white nationalist movements in the United States, many of which use symbols and slogans from ancient Greek and Roman times. For example, an established neo-Nazi website includes an image of the Parthenon in its logo, and rioters wore Spartan helmets in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. These comparisons may seem contradictory to those who associate the ancient world with enlightened political ideals and sophisticated philosophical inquiry. But, as Curtis Dozier points out in this thought-provoking book, it is difficult to imagine a historical era more appropriate for rhetorical use by white nationalists. Indeed, some of the most prominent voices in ancient literature and philosophy have endorsed ideas promoted by contemporary white supremacists, and the social and political reality of the ancient world provides models for the political systems that white supremacists wish to establish today. Partly an introduction to contemporary white nationalist thought, partly an exploration of racism and xenophobia in antiquity, and partly an intellectual history of the political entanglements of the academic study of the past, this book reveals that contemporary white nationalist intellectuals know much more about history than many think, and that they employ this knowledge with alarming success.
