“Hallyu Cultural Production in the Age of Digital Platforms” explores how history, industry structures, and politics interact in the process of transforming the Korean Wave into a digital platform. Dal Young-jin argues that while most research focuses on the hegemony of Korean culture and its control over leading global media platforms, Korean cultural industries are also being reshaped and changed by these platforms, often on a global stage. In light of the growing importance of digital platforms, this work examines the transformative roles of online streaming services – such as Netflix, Viki, and VLive – video sharing platforms such as YouTube, and social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, as well as the power relations between content producers, IT sectors, government, creative workers, and audiences in the globalization of Korean culture and media. By developing critical cultural industries studies as a new theoretical framework, “Hallyu Cultural Production in the Age of Digital Platforms” explores the ever-growing phenomenon of the Korean Wave with the emergence of global digital platforms.
