The work bases its thesis on considering reconciliation between identity and modernity as an entry point to understanding the Japanese experience, by tracing the roots of the advancement since the Tokugawa period and the beginnings of the Meiji era and after 1945, and analyzing the interaction of politics, religion, economics, and education in building the path of modernization. He criticizes the saying "The Japanese miracle", presenting a civilizational approach that sees renaissance as the product of slow accumulation and internal and external interaction. The book is not a simplistic call for a literal reproduction of the Japanese experience. It is an analytical tool that aims to extract general historical norms and laws that enable peoples to build their own modernity based on their inherited cultural values, instead of importing ready-made models that may not be compatible with their emotional and social structure.
