Bookish: How Reading Shapes Our Lives
عاشقة للكتب: كيف تشكّل القراءة حياتنا
What impact do books have on our lives, awareness, and behavior? A question asked by a book published in February 2026 by “Pegasus Books” entitled: “Bookish: How Reading Shapes Our Lives” Bookish: How Reading Shapes our Lives written by Lucy Mangan, a British critic and journalist who has loved reading since childhood to the point that her personal library includes ten thousand books. The book is dedicated to her father, who encouraged her to read. She has previously published a book entitled “Bookworm: A Childhood Memoir,” in which she records her years of buying, borrowing, and acquiring books. She also writes television criticism for The Guardian newspaper, and currently lives with her husband, son, and two cats between London and Norfolk County in eastern England. The essence of the book is a love letter to books: “I was born a lover of books, and I will die a lover of books.” She does not feel as happy as she feels in a public library or a bookstore. Since adolescence until today (she is now fifty years old), her readings range between novels depicting daily life (such as the Brontë sisters’ novels “Wuthering Heights” and “Jane Eyre”), nightmarish utopias (such as Aldous Huxley’s novel “A Beautiful New World”), feminist voices (such as Virginia Woolf’s book “A Room of One’s Own”), biographies and biographies, detective stories, and classics that have entered the world heritage. Then these books - of all kinds - bring pivotal moments to life, and bring us pleasure and solace at different stages of our lives. It is one of the constants in our life, which is full of variables. The greatest virtue that books have is patience: they remain silent on library shelves, no matter how long it takes, waiting for our hands to reach them and waiting for us to re-read them, any number of times.
