الاشتراكية ذات الوجه الإنساني

Translated

The year 1968 represented a global revolution led by young people against social and political systems that they viewed as authoritarian. Combining eyewitness accounts with academic essays, this historical book about the events of 1968 in Eastern Europe focuses on the reform attempts launched by the Prague Spring to build a democratic and humane socialism. We know today that what happened directly in Czechoslovakia, and to a lesser extent in Poland and Yugoslavia, resonated widely throughout the “free world,” and by no means ended in military repression by the Warsaw Pact countries – 1968 was a pivotal event in the subsequent disintegration of the Cold War blocs. In the West, the movement was directed against "consumerism", "formal democracy", imperialism and neo-colonial dependency under late capitalism; And in the East, against the harsh structural oppression of the monopolistic bureaucratic dictatorship. The year 1968 witnessed the culmination of several national events, each with a history extending over many years. However, while Western movements, particularly student movements, have been subject to extensive study, the Czechoslovak events, their underlying circumstances, and their long-term ramifications have not received the attention and appreciation they deserve. This book aims to change that.
