Conditions of slavery | Zionism, Silicon Valley, and digital/settler colonialism in the Palestinian liberation struggle
شروط العبودية | الصهيونية، ووادي السيليكون، والاستعمار الرقمي/الاستيطاني في نضال التحرير الفلسطيني
This groundbreaking book documents how US-based digital platforms and technology companies support Israel's settler-colonial project, and highlights how these platforms have become new tools of anti-Palestinian oppression, despite initially being an effective tool in advancing the Palestinian struggle. The book includes a foreword by Stephen Salaita, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the American University in Cairo. “Conditions of Slavery” is a joint production between Censored Press and Seven Stories Press. Despite their alleged support for freedom of expression and democratic values, tech giants like Meta, Google, and X have turned into channels for promoting the Zionist colonial project. In his book “Terms of Slavery,” Professor Omar Zahzeh shows how these digital giants participate in the oppression of Palestinians through censorship justified by so-called “terms of service” or “community standards.” As AI and metadata are used as tools of oppression, the need for anti-colonial narratives across online platforms increases. Through meticulous analysis and documentation, Zahza explores the meaning of resistance, and what it should mean, in light of Big Tech's consolidation of influence with Israeli settler colonialism and genocide. Through original analysis and careful documentation, Omar Zahza, assistant professor of Arab, Muslim, Ethnic, and Diaspora Studies (AMED) at San Francisco State University, traces the chronology from the Sheikh Jarrah uprisings of 2021 to the beginning of October 2023 through the latest developments to explain the role of social media in reinforcing and suppressing Palestinian narratives.
