This book reviews the Kurdish issue in its modern historical context, by analyzing the situation of the Kurds and Kurdistan regionally and internationally during the period extending between 1514 and 1914 AD, a pivotal stage that formed the political, geographical and social foundations of the contemporary Kurdish reality. The book begins with the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514 AD, as a watershed moment that contributed to redrawing the map of the region and dividing Kurdistan between the Ottoman and Persian states, and ends in 1914 AD with the outbreak of World War I and the beginning of major shifts in the international balance of power. The book traces the development of the political and social structure of the Kurds, from the era of the Kurdish emirates, through its overthrow in the context of Ottoman reforms and international conflicts, all the way to the emergence of the Eastern Question, the Kurdish revolutions and uprisings, and the policies of centralization and hegemony that faced the Kurdish presence. It also discusses the impact of the Islamic University, the Hamidian Legion, and the beginnings of Kurdish national formation in light of the intellectual and political transformations of the late nineteenth century. The book stops at the moment of transition from modern history to contemporary history, with the division of Kurdistan between emerging national states, and the Kurds entering a new phase of the struggle for survival and preservation of identity in the face of projects of Persification, Turkification, and Arabization. It is an analytical historical work that provides an in-depth reading of the roots of the Kurdish issue and its major transformations.
