The book Les Révoltes de la dignité (Uprisings of Dignity: Resistance in the Arab Mediterranean Worlds) represents a qualitative addition to the literature that has dealt with the political and social transformations in the Arab world during recent decades, especially from the late 1970s up to the moment of the Arab revolutions that broke out in 2011 and beyond. The work, supervised by historians Leyla Dakhli and Laurence Dufresne-Aubertin, offers a deep and complex reading of the concept of “dignity” as a central driver of social and political protests in the region. The book starts from a basic premise that “dignity” is not just a demand linked to improving living conditions, such as food, housing, or treatment, but rather a much broader concept, including social recognition, justice, the right to political participation, and living in a space that respects the humanity of the individual. In this sense, dignity becomes a deeply rooted political feeling that drives individuals and groups to rebel when it is violated. The book is a serious attempt to understand one of the most present concepts in the contemporary Arab movement: dignity. Through a multidisciplinary and multi-vocal approach, he succeeds in presenting a complex and rich picture of the drivers of the protests, far from simplification or reductionism. It is not just a documentation of a historical stage, but rather a call to rethink the meaning of politics, justice, and humanity in an Arab context that is still experiencing the repercussions of those uprisings today.
