The Great Betrayal: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in the Middle East

الخيانة الكبرى: الصراع من أجل الحرية والديمقراطية في الشرق الأوسط

Translated

The Middle East witnessed political and social transformations, interspersed with periods of popular movement and foreign interventions. Despite attempts to establish more democratic systems, they still suffer from persistent tensions between governments and societies. In light of this scene, questions have arisen about the reasons for faltering reform paths. In this context, Professor Fawaz Girgis in his book “The Great Betrayal: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in the Middle East” provides a comprehensive analysis of these challenges, tracing their historical roots, and discussing the internal and external factors that contributed to shaping the current political reality. The book highlights the tensions between the state and society, the failure of the ruling elites to respond to citizens’ demands, in addition to economic mismanagement and external interventions that further aggravated the situation. Girgis starts from a pivotal question: Why does political change in the Middle East seem complicated and difficult to achieve? The author proposes the hypothesis that a combination of political tyranny, Western interventions, and continuing regional conflicts has led to political paralysis and economic stagnation. He points out that the ruling powers in the region have been able to thwart attempts at change through strong partnerships with external parties, which has hindered the ability of peoples to achieve their aspirations towards good governance and social justice. In his analysis, Girgis relies on a comprehensive review of the major events that shaped the course of the Middle East over more than a century, starting with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the division of the region between European powers, all the way to the Iranian Islamic Revolution and the contemporary Arab uprisings. The author believes that the people of the Middle East have been constantly excluded from the decision-making process, whether by local regimes or by external forces that contributed to shaping political maps according to their interests. Girgis refuses to explain the region's crises through a one-dimensional perspective, such as modernity or colonialism only, considering that the scene is more complex. He emphasizes that a comprehensive analysis must take into account the great diversity in the contexts of Arab and Islamic countries, in addition to the changing factors that make it impossible to generalize a single theory that explains all the challenges facing the region. It can be said that this book represents an attempt to understand more deeply the obstacles that prevent the achievement of democracy in the Middle East, away from simplistic explanations. Despite the many challenges, Girgis expresses cautious optimism about the future of the region, as he believes that the new generation of Arab and Muslim youth, who are increasingly aware of their rights, constitutes a driving force for change. In his opinion, authoritarian regimes and their international allies cannot control the course of history absolutely. Rather, people, especially younger generations, play a decisive role in reshaping political and social reality. Despite the imposed restrictions, the rising intellectual and social trends reflect an increasing insistence on extracting rights and achieving justice. The author believes that the gradual transformations, albeit slow, indicate a new awareness that refuses to submit to the status quo and seeks to establish more just and free foundations, which may pave the way for fundamental reforms in the long term.
