_Messaging asks_ What do equity, diversity, and inclusion messaging offer for the university as an institution, and for those who are meant to benefit from equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives? What do these letters tell us about institutional relations, control, and creative resistance? * In an intimate and poignant manner, this valuable work of scholarship by four public scholars traces the threads of power that permeate institutional correspondence. In addressing official claims of inclusivity, the authors examine how the university uses messages about equality, diversity and inclusion to establish a false identity – one that is equitable, inclusive, diverse and decolonised – while seeking to fend off criticism. “Letters” focuses on reclaiming the efforts and forms of self-writing undertaken by members of marginalized groups in institutions, highlighting the voices of structurally marginalized groups to diagnose why and how equality, diversity, and inclusion negatively impact some individuals, and poignantly identifying creative ways to intervene in the face of the neoliberal university.
