The War of 1812 revealed many heroes and heroines from Canada and the United States, and Major General Sir Isaac Brooke (1769-1812) was one of them. _The book "The Astonishing General"_ tells the story of Brock's life, career and legacy, especially in Canada, and the circumstances in which he lived. Despite his success in taking over Detroit, Brock was, in some ways, the least expected hero. He was admired almost as much by his American opponents as by his own people, and was widely revered. This reputation was strengthened by his success in gaining Tecumseh's trust and ensuring the loyalty of the great commander's army to the British. What is most surprising is how a British general whose military role lasted only less than five months became the most famous hero of that war, which lasted two and a half years.
