Fascism is no longer just a topic in history books, but a current political challenge. What can we do to confront the forces that once plunged the world into war and genocide, and are now re-emerging? Writer Jonas Bals explains what fascism is in the past and present, citing examples from Ukraine, Russia, Palestine, Israel, and especially the United States of America under Donald Trump. In Norway, we do not have large-scale racist movements or parties, but here we have also witnessed terrorist acts targeting young social democrats, Muslims and homosexuals. Ideas that were once attributed to the extreme right are now increasingly popular. To reverse this development, we must know the history of fascism. We must organize ourselves and build coalitions, because anti-fascism is collective action.
