الديمقراطية الاجتماعية والسياسة الحضرية: استجابات الأحزاب لتنوّع اليسار في المدن الأوروبية
The book “Social Democracy and Urban Politics: Party Responses to the Diversity of the Left in European Cities,” edited by Nick Brandall and Owind Bratberg, comes at a moment when European cities are witnessing profound political and social transformations, making urban space a center for reshaping the left. This work provides an analytical reading of the path of social democratic parties within cities, where issues of social diversity and class transformation intersect with questions of political representation and the formulation of public programmes, within a European context characterized by changing voting patterns and shifting priorities of voters. The city appears in this context as a dense political field, within which interactions between economy, identity, and party organization intensify. The book, published by the British University of Manchester Press in October 2025, begins with a description of the social structures in European cities, where urban life has become governed by increasing professional and cultural diversity, the expansion of service and knowledge work sectors, and shifts in patterns of settlement and housing. This approach shows that the urban-rural divide has become a crucial factor in redrawing the political map of the left, with the center of electoral gravity shifting towards the big cities. The analysis also shows that electoral geography is no longer a direct reflection of class only, but rather the result of a complex interplay between social location, lifestyles, and cultural positioning within the urban space.
