أصول الاستعمار.. لماذا تُعدّ الجغرافيا مهمة؟
Historians explain the emergence of European colonialism in Asia during the eighteenth century either through the role of merchants or through a debate about power imbalances. This element indicates that the environment was also an important factor. Taking India (1600-1800) as a prime example, tropical monsoon conditions, extreme seasonal fluctuations, and low land productivity all weakened land-tax empires from within. The coastal areas provided a more suitable environment. Sometime in the 18th century, a shift began as coastal trade increased, creating complementary services and encouraging the migration of capital and skills to provide these services. However, the emergence of a new state based on this base depended on building links with the internal regions, which was still a risky project with uncertain results. European merchants were a driving force in making this happen. But we cannot understand this process without paying careful attention to geography.
