The Mad Man in the White House The extraordinary untold story of how a disillusioned American diplomat named William C. Bullitt to Freud's clinic in 1926, and how Freud and his patient collaborated to write a psychological biography of President Woodrow Wilson." - The Wall Street Journal "A captivating and engaging story about a rare masterpiece that highlights the possibilities (and dangers) of studying the psychological well-being of presidents — a field that remains as vitally important as ever." - The Atlantic "Excellent... Nearly a century after Wilson's death, Weil's study is the first "One of its kind that provides a comprehensive historical account of Bullitt's long relationship with Wilson." - _American Literary History_ When the fate of millions depends on the decisions of a mentally disturbed leader, what can one do? Concerned by President Woodrow Wilson's irrational handling of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, American diplomat William C. I asked this particular question. With the help of his friend Sigmund Freud, and in collaboration with people in Wilson's inner circle, Bullitt set out to write a psychological biography of a troubled president. In "The Madman in the White House," Patrick Whale revives this forgotten image. The manuscript was completed in 1932, but the book was not published until 1966, in a heavily revised edition. By then, the aura of mystery surrounding psychoanalysis had faded, and Wilson's legacy had become irrefutable. Critics roundly criticized the book, and Freud's descendants denied his involvement in it. But in 2014, Weil discovered the original manuscript, which leaves no doubt about Freud's role, or the importance of Bullitt and Freud's analysis. By reevaluating controversial psychobiography, Weil finds a powerful warning about the impact of a single unbalanced figure on the course of history.
