The Caucus for New Political Science (CNPS) was founded in 1967, when hundreds of dissident political scientists walked out of the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association (APSA) in protest of the association's refusal to take a formal position against the Vietnam War. The group soon expanded its mission to include challenging the association's prevailing behavioral and pluralist principles, protesting the lack of democratic procedures and transparency in the organization, and opposing relations between the leadership and government agencies involved in clandestine activities. The group remains unique among the more than 50 organized sections of the American Political Science Association, in being the only section that defines itself ideologically and politically, rather than based on research topic, methodology, subdiscipline, or identity. The book "Criticism of Political Science" distinguishes between the discipline of political science (its methods and concepts) and its profession (its individuals and institutions), seeking to transfer the history of this discipline from its current form as intellectual history to a political perspective. The book argues that understanding the development of any discipline requires the same kind of theoretical analysis that political scientists apply to other political institutions. By studying universities and professional associations as political institutions, this approach places political conflicts and ideological disputes at the heart of the history of the discipline. Reviewing fifty years of debate, controversy, and internal conflicts in the political science profession, the book offers a critique of the profession and the discipline of political science, which remain woefully disconnected from the concerns of ordinary citizens, particularly the working class and the poor, around the world.
