Transcending Boundaries, a comprehensive historical study of the American aircraft industry (now known as the aerospace industry), is the most comprehensive history of the field ever completed. Although it covers the industry's development from the beginnings of aviation to the present day, it offers much more than a simple chronology, analyzing the major economic, military, technical, and international influences on the industry, and showing how it has played a pivotal role in American military and technological leadership from its humble beginnings. Drawing on original sources whenever possible, Crossing the Boundaries focuses on the commercial side of aircraft. It is neither a history of aviation nor a history of production in the industry, although it deals with both aspects. Instead, Donald M. Pattillo highlights the development and production of aircraft in different time periods in the context of advances in aviation. Transcending Boundaries argues that the industry's core existence, its reliance on military contracts, was both its strength and its weakness. Even during periods of military expansion, Pattillo explains, the industry remained an unstable and insecure enterprise. The meticulously researched book assesses the environmental impacts on the industry, including the pressures that have often led to ethical controversy. Unlike any other technological industry, the aircraft industry has truly unique and paradoxical characteristics; Although it provides vital technical and production capabilities to the state, the demand for these capabilities may be affected by external developments that it cannot predict or influence. Transcending Boundaries transcends narrow disciplines, blending aviation science and technology, business administration, international business, history of science and technology, national security studies, and international relations. With its simple style, it is easy to understand by a diverse audience, including industry and military professionals, as well as the general public interested in aviation and technology.
