In the post-Cold War world, foreign policy makers seem to be scrambling for new ideas. Although academic literature on international relations issues is increasingly being produced, and in some cases evolving, policymakers appear to be ignoring much of this academic work in their pursuit of new policy ideas. The contributors to this volume address the potential and benefits of making contemporary international relations theory more relevant to foreign policy conduct and international affairs. The articles in this volume evaluate the gap between theory and practice. The volume consists of two parts: the first part explores the failure of much scholarship in international relations to address practical problems. These articles address problems arising from differences in the issues of interest to academics and policymakers, the institutional frameworks within which they work, and their cognitive and motivational backgrounds. The articles in the second part of the book explain how policy makers can benefit from international theory and research. First, these authors argue that scholars should pay more theoretical attention to how foreign policy is shaped by its domestic political context. Second, researchers should do more to clarify how specialized areas of research shed light on specific policy challenges, and how approaches based on the rational actor model can help understand current political dilemmas. The book includes contributions from Stephen J. Brahms, Emily O. Goldman, Bruce Jentleson, and Eric F. Larson, and Robert J. Leeper, and Donna J. Nencik, the late Kenneth Organski, Donald Rothschild, Arthur Stein, and Ernest J. Wilson III, plus editors.
