US Soldier vs. Japanese Infantryman This study, fully illustrated, examines the role of US Army and Japanese forces in the fight for control of the Philippine Islands during the crucial months of World War II. In October 1944, the US Sixth Army landed its forces on the island Leyte, located within the Central Philippine Islands that were under Japanese control, sparking a series of battles that became the largest confrontation between the American and Japanese armies. Determined to liberate the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur's forces faced Japanese forces intent on inflicting heavy casualties on their opponents, amid rugged terrain stretching from the streets of urban Manila to the mountains and jungles of Leyte. Featuring custom-made artist drawings, archival photographs, and color maps, this book provides a study of three important battles of the Philippine Campaign. The 1st Division of the Imperial Japanese Army encountered the 24th US Army Division during its attack towards Ormoc Harbor (Breaking Ridge, 3–11 November 1944), in a battle between an elite Japanese division and regular pre-war US Army units. The US 38th Division fought a reinforced 39th Infantry Regiment at Zig Zag Pass (1–13 February 1945), a battle that saw a relatively young US division confront veterans of the Imperial Japanese Army positioned in a heavily fortified area. Finally, Greg Adams examines the Battle of Ibu Dam (May 6–21, 1945), where the veteran US 43rd Division fought against Kawashima's forces. This interesting study sheds light on fighters on both sides.
