الاستعمار من واقع التجربة .. كتابات فيتنامية عن الاستعمار، 1900-1931
The first three decades of the twentieth century in Vietnam, then under colonial rule, witnessed a period of transition between the prevailing Confucian worldview and the emerging Western worldview, resulting in an abundance of political literature. These documents, dating from that transitional era, belong to various literary genres: propaganda leaflets, open letters to government officials, texts for private or confidential classes, statements by political or cultural organizations, newspaper articles, public statements, petitions addressed to international organizations, and poems. Whether these documents were from the old or new era, they all expressed their opinion about the colonial situation of their country. Researcher Truong Bo Lam has collected twenty of these documents, all written between 1900 and 1931, in an anthology that captures the spirit of the conflicting ideologies and political conflicts of that era. Originally written in Vietnamese, French, and Classical Chinese, these documents have been translated into English by Lam, annexed by individual introductions to precisely clarify their historical contexts. Lamm also provides a detailed overview of the contemporary situation at the time these documents were written, to shed more light on the broader themes that connect them. In Vietnam, these writings are well-known texts, quoted in every publication dealing with that period; However, to our knowledge, only a few have been published in full, and none have been translated into English. This translation represents a valuable addition to the fields of Southeast Asian and colonial studies, and will be welcomed by historians, political scientists, and anthropologists alike.
